Happy Black History Month!

Instead of troubling you with the same lecture about Harriet Tubman that we've all heard since 4th grade, I've decided to talk about black females in fashion. Being a black female myself there is a lot of controversy dealing with the lack of black models on runways. Lately

I've been seeing a change, more black girls on the runways, but there is still a lack of black female model icons. Maybe because they're like a diamond in the rough? We're only blessed with such a gift every once in a

while.

Alek Wek

Jourdan Dunn

(born 3 August 1990 in London, Enland) is a British Fashion Model. She was discovered

in Primark in 2006

Naomi Campbell

(born 22 May 1970) is an English supermodel of Jamaican descent.

Chanel Iman

(born December 1, 1990), is an American fashion model. Won third place in Ford Model's Supermodel of the World 2006, and ended up signing with the agency.

Ashely Stymest
Born 1991 in England

Ashely Stymest (known as Ash) signed to London's Models 1 in 2008. He's graced the pages of magazines such as i-D, Wonderland, Dazed and Confused, and Italian Vogue. Since, being known as one of fashions favorite alternative models of the moment. Ash was discovered by photographer Hedi Slimane in 2008, who requested him for his personal work. Ash was featured on the cover of Vogue Hommes for Japan later that same year, which was photographed by Slimane himself. His career took off after his debut at the Balenciaga show in Paris. Ash is known for his adventurous poses, nonchalant punk persona, and his tattoos.

Terry Richardson

Hello welcome!

Today I look at the work of Terry Richardson. Son of Bob Richardson, (also a fashion photographer) Terry started as an assistant for Tony Kent. Later he grew to be known as one of current fashion’s most sexually liberated photographers, daring to do shoots that make mothers cry and fathers angry. At first I couldn’t even look at his photos. I felt they were too perverted for the public eye, which is still true from some of his pictures. Soon after seeing more of his editorial work instead of just his books, he’s really grown on me. There’s something so honest and raw about his photography. Not many people know how hard it can be to pose in from of a camera with someone you don’t know behind it. Terry Richardson seems to bring out what everyone has hiding inside of them. There is such a natural intensity that I feel fashion doesn’t see often. It almost gives the viewer the feeling of being naked. Wild. Enjoy these examples of his work.

This editorial in particular really caught my attention because H&M was the client. H&M would not have an editorial as raunchy as say an American Apparel ad. Why use Terry Richardson? To my surprise this editorial is beautiful. It has such a lusty but delicate look. The bit of work from him is actually refreshing. It’s a little more mysterious then his usual brutally honest material. Well done.
